Supportive guidance to help you recover at home
Looking After Yourself at Home
- Get plenty of rest
Your body needs energy to fight the infection, so try to rest as much as possible. - Stay hydrated
Drink water regularly. Warm drinks like tea or soup can also be soothing. - Eat what you can
You may not feel like eating much, but try small, regular meals if possible. - Keep your room comfortable
Fresh air and a comfortable temperature can help you feel more at ease.
Keeping people who live with me safe
- Minimise contact
The person who is ill should try to stay in a separate room from others, and if possible, use a separate bathroom. - Ventilate
Keep indoor spaces well ventilated by opening windows and doors regularly. - Sanitise and Wash Hands
You and the people who live with you should wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Surfaces like high touch door handles, remote controls and shared area should be regularly cleaned. - Avoid sharing items
Do not share dishes, drinking glasses, utensils or towels. This will reduce the possibility of sharing the infection.
Managing Common Symptoms
- Fever, aches or headaches
You can take paracetamol or ibuprofen (if suitable for you) to reduce fever and relieve pain. Follow the dosage instructions carefully. - Cough
Resting, drinking warm fluids, and using honey (for adults and children over 1 year) may help soothe a cough. - Sore throat
Warm drinks, lozenges, or gargling with salt water may provide relief. - Tiredness and weakness
Rest, pace yourself and avoid pushing too hard. Gradually return to normal activity as you feel able.
When to Seek Further Help
Get urgent medical help (call 999 or attend A&E) if you:
- Have difficulty breathing or shortness of breath at rest. If you have a pulse oximeter, use it, and get help if it reads below 94.
- Feel persistent chest pain or pressure
- Are confused or hard to wake
- Notice a bluish colour in your lips or face
Contact NHS 111 or your GP if you:
- Are getting worse or not improving after several days
- Have concerns about managing your symptoms at home
- Have underlying health conditions or a weakened immune system
