From June 1st 2026 we will be offering the NHS south yorkshire covid antiviral treatment service.


To access the free NHS covid antiviral medication you must have received a letter from the NHS stating you are eligible for free NHS covid lateral flow tests and for antiviral treatment. Click here for details of those who are eligible.

Who offers the NHS south yorkshire covid anti-viral treatment service?

Our independent prescriber pharmacists have all been trained in prescribing anti viral treatments for patients with covid-19. Our pharmacists are experts in medications and will make sure you get the right treatment for you. All our pharmacists offering the service work regularly for Wicker Pharmacy, ensuring  you receive a consistent service from trusted professionals. All our pharmacists are DBS checked and registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Wicker Pharmacy is an award winning pharmacy organisation, providing pharmacy services to the people of Sheffield until late every day since 1952.


Do I have to come to Wicker Pharmacy in Sheffield for the NHS south yorkshire covid anti-viral treatment service?

No,  our pharmacists will conduct the consultation by video or phone call and the prescription will be sent to your local pharmacy.


What happens in the consultation for NHS south yorkshire covid anti viral treatment?

The pharmacist will phone you and

  • ask if you have a smart phone and are able to receive a text to link you to a video consultation.  If you do not have access to a smartphone or, do not have access to data,  the consultation will take place over the phone. 
  • ask for permission to look at your GP and NHS records - please be aware we will not be able to offer treatment without seeing your health care record.


You will receive a text with a link to the video consultation.  You will have to click on the link, then press the button to test the microphone and then click on the button allowing access to the microphone and camera.  If you can't get it to work, don't worry, the pharmacist will call you back and the consultation will happen on the phone.


  • The pharmacist will ask to see your positive lateral flow test
  • The pharmacist will ask about your symptoms and your medical history, 
  • They will also ask about which medication you take,  please make sure you mention any over the counter medication or herbal medication you take as well as the medicines on prescription.
  • The pharmacist may decide:
  • the medication will work for you and talk to you about how it works, including any possible side effects.
  • the medication they can prescribe is not suitable for you and refer you to secondary care (your local hospital) for intravenous medicine. 
  • you are not eligible for the medicine and give advice on how to look after yourself and what to do if your symptoms get worse.
  • The pharmacist will send a prescription to the pharmacy of your choice and phone the pharmacy to make sure they have the medication in stock.



Who is the NHS south yorkshire covid anti viral treatment for?


To be eligible for the covid antiviral medication you must have received a letter from the NHS letting you know you are eligible for free NHS covid lateral flow tests and for  antiviral treatment,  have a positive lateral flow test and live in south yorkshire.


You may be at highest risk of getting seriously ill from COVID-19 if you:

  • have Down's syndrome, or another chromosomal condition that affects your immune system
  • have certain types of cancer, or had treatment for certain types of cancer
  • have sickle cell disease
  • have certain conditions affecting your blood, including some types of blood cancer
  • have chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 4 or 5, including people on dialysis
  • have severe liver disease
  • have had an organ transplant
  • have certain autoimmune or inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease
  • have HIV or AIDS and have a weakened immune system
  • have a condition affecting your immune system
  • have a condition affecting the brain or nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, motor neurone disease, myasthenia gravis, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease or certain types of dementia
  • have certain lung conditions or treatments for lung conditions

How do I access the NHS south yorkshire covid anti viral treatment?

If you are eligible (see below) and have got a positive covid test, and your symptoms started less than 5 days ago.  you can :

  • be referred by your GP, or
  • you can refer yourself by booking at the link below.
